Cold-stun season is here and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is gearing up to accept stranded turtles suffering from severe hypothermia.
When sea turtles wash up cold and still, they’re not gone, they’re freezing. If you see one on the beach, DON’T touch it, and DON’T move it back into the water.

Each year, dozens of cold-stunned sea turtles arrive at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in urgent need of specialized care. When water temperatures drop too quickly, sea turtles can become cold-stunned — a life-threatening condition that leaves them weak, immobile, and vulnerable.
Currently, 57% of the turtles treated at the center are cold-stunned, making this one of the most common and critical challenges they face. To improve survival rates, the center is raising funds for a Veterinary Intensive Care Unit (ICU) — an essential tool that allows staff to safely and gradually warm these fragile animals while closely monitoring their recovery.
This new ICU will play a vital role in giving injured and cold-stunned turtles the best possible chance at rehabilitation and release back into the wild.
You can help make a difference. Visit seaturtlehospital.org to learn more about this important initiative and make a donation today. Together, we can give sea turtles a second chance at life.
